Westenhanger House – Extension/Refurbishment
Project
This marvellous kitchen extension and major adaptation to the existing house took place in 2019-2020. The charm that the existing house offers was preserved whilst introducing the element of surprise when walking from the front entrance to the back garden where the major works took place.
Construction
The existing kitchen was demolished to make way for this impressive extension, including a cantilevered external corner which appears to be suspended in the air, overlooking a winding path leading through the landscaped garden.
The extension’s polished concrete floor enhances the use of natural light and complements the reflections created by the glazing and mirrors. The internal decorations are sharp and clean. The size of the kitchen extension allowed for oversized window panes and extra-long kitchen worktops.
Construction Conundrum
The beautiful handmade Kolumba ceramic bricks used for the external finish were a rare and unconventional choice. The desired finished look doubled the level of experience and thought required for this as the brief was to affix the bricks in straight lines as opposed to in brickbond pattern. This created all sorts of consideration for a suitable way to clad the building without ruining the visual effect of the brickwork, and not to spoil the colour of the bricks with cement.
